Biography
Art has the potential to elevate our human experience as we take inspiration from God’s august design. A tiny flower resting on the bough, an elusive smile, the rising wave, or a cloudburst can fill one’s heart with wonder and reverence. I believe dialling in to the awesome and minutiae of the natural world, enables and enriches the creative process.
I am an artist based in India and my creative expression is rooted in my growing up years. I was brought up by loving and supportive parents who were also ‘Artists’. I spent hours gazing at my mom’s lovely paintings that adorned the walls of our home. These gems captivated my tender spirit at a very young age. My dad was a skilled architect, sketched beautifully, and loved nature. He spent his mornings in our house garden tending to plants, pruning trees, and carving green canopies. The garden was also my favourite childhood ‘Playground’. My brother and I spent a lot of time outdoors playing cricket, flying kites, and chasing after butterflies. The garden was also our ‘Starship’ offering stellar views of the night sky, the raging storm clouds, and the foggy hibernal mornings. I wasn’t aware at that time these experiences were birthing and shaping the ‘painter’ in me. In school, I enjoyed drawing and later experimented with portraiture in oil paints. Although I pursued a career in teaching for 7 years after majoring in Economics, the zeal to create never left me. I wrote poetry and learnt to play the guitar but found most joy in painting. During the pandemic in 2020, I devoted more time to paint, and learn from the timeless workmanship of old masters and talented contemporary artists as well. As I continue to hone my skills and grow as an artist, there is not one dull moment. Each day brings forth edification and fresh discoveries.
Most of my work is representational with a focus on narrative, composition, colour harmony, and detail. Through portrait paintings, I aim to tell honest stories that resonate with the viewer at a personal level. One of my favourite subjects is ‘children’. It’s a delight to just watch kids play with abandon and laugh without reason. As an artist I have the privilege to recapture these sublime moments on canvas. Some elements in my landscape paintings include distant roads, open fields, expansive mountains, and meandering rivers. These emerge from my love for the great outdoors and childhood memories of four wheeling on mountain roads. The freedom and joy of standing amidst the blustery winds and witnessing the changing skyline cannot be described. Painting allows me to not only relive these precious moments but also to curate an experience for the viewers that hopefully takes their breath away. ‘Art’ for me is more than a hobby or profession. It’s a beautiful opportunity to pause, reflect, and wander in non-material things away from the city hustle. It is also my way of honouring my dad and my heavenly father.
